What whales can you see in southern Tenerife?
Teno-Rasca protected area
**Tropical Pilot Whale**
Did you know that the skin of pilot whales becomes darker with age? Their size ranges from 4.5 m in females to 6 m in males and they can weigh up to 2 tons. They live in groups of up to 30 individuals and can dive for 22 minutes, reaching depths of 1000 m. They mainly feed on cephalopods.
**Bottlenose Dolphin**
Did you know that dolphins sleep with one eye open because one hemisphere of their brain remains active during sleep? We can observe them all year round. They live in family groups close to the coast. Their size can reach up to 3.30 m, and their lifespan is around 30-35 years in the wild. They weigh around 500 kg and usually feed on small fish.
**SPORADIC SPECIES**
**Striped Dolphin**
It is larger than spotted dolphins, reaching up to 1.60 m in length and weighing around 160 kg. They are bluish-gray in color, easily recognizable by the black stripe running from the eye to the belly along the entire side. They usually travel in groups of 15 to 80 individuals.
**Spotted Dolphin**
It is an oceanic dolphin, usually moving in groups of several hundred individuals. They reach a length of up to 2.3 m and a weight of up to 140 kg. Adults are easily recognizable by the small spots on their bodies and mainly feed on small fish.
**Sperm Whales**
Did you know that sperm whales have a layer of fat that can be up to 35 cm thick? The most well-known and famous is MOBY DICK. They can dive to around 2000 m for about 2 hours. Their main food is cephalopods and fish, and their weight can reach up to 57 tons. They reach a maximum length of 18 m.
**Bryde's Whale**
Did you know that the stream of water they blow can reach a height of 6 m? They can ingest up to 2 tons of fish and water. They weigh around 40 tons and reach a length of about 16 m. In spring, they can be found during the peak feeding period.
Migratory species
**Common Dolphin**
This species is easily recognizable by the yellow color on both sides. They move in very large groups, which can number up to 1000 individuals. They can reach a length of up to 2.5 m and a weight of around 150 kg.
Orca
Did you know that orcas, despite their nickname "killer whales," belong to the dolphin family? It is the largest dolphin species and the only modern species recognized in the genus Orcinus. They cannot stay out of the water for long because their weight crushes them. They have a very long dorsal fin, which in males reaches up to 1.8 m in length. They have distinctive black and white coloring, unique to each individual, allowing for their identification. The female usually weighs less than 4 tons and is about 7.7 m long, while the adult male can weigh 5.5 tons and reach 9 m in length.
Humpback
Did you know that whales can mimic the human voice? Also known as humpback whales, they are among the largest whales. Adults reach a length of 12 to 16 m and weigh around 36,000 kg. They are acrobatic animals. They primarily feed in the polar regions in summer and migrate to tropical and subtropical waters to breed and give birth during the polar winter. Their main food is krill and small fish.
Blue Whale
Did you know that blue whales can be recognized by their unique skin markings? Their average length is 24 to 27 meters and weight 100 to 120 tons, although there are records of individuals exceeding 30 m in length and weighing 170 tons, making them the largest animals on Earth. The front part of their oral cavity is thick, with 300 to 400 baleen plates on each side. They primarily feed on krill. The skin markings of each blue whale are unique, like fingerprints, allowing for individual identification.
Green Turtle
The name comes from the color of the fat under their shell. They reach a length of 71 to 1.66 cm and a weight of around 200 kg. They primarily feed on algae growing in shallow waters, but also eat jellyfish, crabs, snails, and worms. It is believed to be the longest-living of all sea turtles, living around 80 years.
Loggerhead Turtle
It is a large sea turtle, often called loggerhead because of the ease with which fishermen could catch it while it swam on the surface. It is the sea turtle species that most frequently visits the Canary Islands and is endangered. They reach a length of about 90 cm and an average weight of 135 kg, but can grow up to 213 cm in length and weigh 545 kg. They are primarily carnivorous but also feed on fish, jellyfish, squid, sponges, shrimp, sea urchins, and fish eggs.
